Trip Planner: Central America / Guatemala / Sacatepequez Department / Antigua / Iglesia de La Merced
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. Iglesia de La Merced Reviews
There are so many beautiful old churches in Antigua, but La Merced has to be at the top of the list. If you are in Antigua during Semana Santa, two processions will originate from La Merced -- one on ... more »

I tried the tortillas with guacamole and cheese, they are worth 5 Q and are very rich. I must say that I would not dare to try an omelette with meat or chicken because it is not q so clean and well cooked can be, at the end it is street food, so better to be a little careful.
La Merced is a gorgeous church on the north side of Antigua that is painted a mustard yellow in colour and has incredibly intricate and impressive architecture. This church was definitely one of my favourites in Antigua and it is a fantastic place to take some photos. On the weekends local vendors set up shop around the church and sell street food, ice cream and colourful handicrafts. This church is a must-see when in Antigua!
Well worth stopping and going into the church. Built in the 1600's very beautiful.
