Convento Santa Clara, Antigua

#6 of 15 in Historic Sites in Antigua
Visit the historical Convento Santa Clara, a tourist site displaying the remains of an elaborate convent complex that once housed over 50 nuns. Originally founded in 1699, the convent suffered irreparable damage in a 1773 earthquake. Since its abandonment, the site has been moderately restored to exhibit its stone archways, church halls, and garden courtyards. Take a stroll among the colorful flowers and trickling water fountains, followed by a picnic on the grass. Keep an eye out for hidden passages and underground rooms. Put Convento Santa Clara into our Antigua tour itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • From the main courtyard you can see the volcanoes of Fire and Water. It also offers beautiful views of the city.

  • Antigua is one of those beautiful towns and cities that remained as still in time. These ruins show the splendor and richness that he had and will have this fabulous city. Not only does this place impress but also its streets, churches and ancient buildings, many of them practically ruined by past earthquakes.

  • The Convento de Santa Clara is a large and interesting convent to explore with beautiful gardens, a gorgeous courtyard, and detailed colonial architecture. It was great for photography! Inside the tall walls surrounding this convent, I discovered such beautiful and intricate colonial architecture, a pretty water fountain in the centre of an amazing courtyard, expansive rooms and gorgeous manicured gardens. The courtyard was surrounded by buildings with beautiful arches. There were lots of pathways, hallways and interesting hidden areas to explore and it was a really beautiful place to wander around. The views of the courtyard and volcano landscape were amazing after climbing the stairs to the top of the ruins. This convent was a fascinating place to explore and take photos and the atmosphere was so peaceful and relaxed. The entrance fee was Q40. This convent is definitely worth a visit when in Antigua! Review based on my experience visiting in November 2016.
