La Soufriere Volcano, Saint-Claude

4.6
#1 of 11 in Nature in Basse-Terre Island
Visit the highest point on the island, the summit of La Soufriere Volcano, an active volcano. Challenge yourself and hike to the summit, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking ocean and island views from a height of 1,234 m (4,049 ft). During the approximate 2-hour hike, you'll pass through rainforest, montane thicket, and cloud forest before you reach the ash-strewn crater with an active lava dome at its center. From here, choose to walk around the active dome via a steep rope-assisted path (which takes about 2 hours) further across the island to the village of Richmond, or hike back down. • Bad weather for our ascent, with some slippery places, but nice moment anyway, provide very good shoes and water, the end is quite difficult with important steps.

  • If you are on the island, then it is essential that you do this, so long as you are in moderate health. The climb to the top is very well signed and in good condition, with plenty of places to catch your breath along the way as you admire the view and the amazing scope of nature on display. After a spectacular climb to the summit, you can look down across the island while inhaling some sulfur fumes. Highly recommended, even for kids of around 7 or up
  • This volcano is a BEAUTY. There's a warm water natural pool at the base for swimming! Amazing hike with thick forestry. Much longer than I expected but definitely worth it to go to the TOP. Volcano was smoking at the top, nothing crazy. They have these flowers at the top, I had to jump the fence to get one.
