Underwater Sculptures, St. George's

Head beneath the surface to see an interesting and unusual art and conservation project at Underwater Sculptures. Created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the park features over 65 individual sculptures, with some positioned together to form a scene, and some standing alone. Open to artistic interpretation, the sculptures have been designed to promote the regrowth of coral and other aquatic life in the area. The hope is that the sculptures will provide a sanctuary for marine life once coral polyps attach to the concrete statues, and alleviate the intense pressure on the ecosystem because of tourism and hurricanes. Explore the underwater park on a scuba diving, snorkeling, or glass-bottomed boat excursion. • Interesting snorkel. Limited sea creatures on our visit. Cool to see for sure
  • I visited the underwater sculpture Park in early March, 2019 and was distinctly underwhelmed. It is interesting to see the sculptures but as a snorkelling adventure it was fairly dire. Many years of tourist boats visiting the site have churned up the seabed so that the coral in that area is largely dead. Snorkelling in the Caribbean usually lets one see vast numbers of beautiful fish but certainly when I was there and spent nearly an hour swimming around their virtually none were visible. If I was to visit Grenada again (and I love the island) I would not bother going snorkelling there but find some where entirely different in that region.
