New Cemetery, Kulusuk

3.1
#5 of 8 in Historic Sites in Greenland
Observe the unique local tradition at New Cemetery, a well-maintained burial site stretching on permafrost ground. The cemetery is arranged according to an Inuit tradition whereby the name of the deceased is carried on to another after death--thus, no engraved names appear on the white crosses. Note that you'll find many more graves here than in Kulusuk's old cemetery. Climb to the top of the hill for a view of the village and Greenland's wild, icy beauty. Plan to visit New Cemetery during your Kulusuk vacation using our convenient Kulusuk vacation site.

  • On their dead cross, there are no names, cause the people believe after dead their soul will reborn in a new child, but If their names are written on the cross, it means the soul is "dead" and will not come back to a new live.
