Mystras, Sparta

Uninhabited for nearly 200 years, Mystras is a fortified town with a long history. In 1249, William of Villehardouin commissioned the castle to be built atop a large hill that overlooked the town. For many years, the castle passed hands as the town fell victim to siege after siege by various ancient civilizations. Despite a revolving ownership, the town often played a central political and cultural role, from acting as the seat of the Byzantine military governor to being the capital of the Despotate of Morea. Wander through the ruins of the ancient city, and enjoy the views of Sparta below. Use our Sparta online vacation planner to add Mystras and other attractions to your Sparta vacation plans.
