The Acropolis of Rhodes, Rhodes Town

Ruin · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
The last vestiges of the island's ancient past, the remains of The Acropolis of Rhodes sit on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. This structure dates back to the 3rd century BCE and once housed large temples and public buildings, along with a network of subterranean sanctuaries. Excavated during the early decades of the 20th century, the acropolis suffered massive damage in bomb raids during World War II. Explore the partially reconstructed section, which features several important monuments, including a temple dedicated to Apollo, a small theater, and a stadium. • We caught the hop on hop off bus up here. The bus was E10 and may have been the Red Bus City Tour. The views were spectacular. We wandered around the ruins for 1/2 hr. . But the best part was...  more »
  • Wild and kind of remote but with great views of both Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. Sadly the Doric Temple of Apollo's still under scaffold but both the stadium and theatre can be seen. Lovely stroll.....  more »

  • If you like your histoty like I do, the Acropolis of Rhodes is well worth a visit. Best time to visit is early morning, as there are fewer people around. There are no refreshment facilities, so make sure you bring some water to drink, especially if you have walked here. To get the most from your visit, do some back ground reading - even if its only on google. You will appreciate the site much more. There are no staff on site. By going early in the morning, you will avoid the coach loads of tourists. I think it was well worth a visit. There is no entrance fee. Its free.
  • Be sure to have picked up a Blue Guide and read the brief section on the Acropolis before you visit, as it sounds like signage, which there was very little of in 1995 when was here, is still an issue. I was lucky enough to have stayed nearby for a few weeks back then so it was very close and I came every day to run or walk and escape the fighting of the family I was staying with (lovely people but all families fight as the kids enter adulthood---no?).
