See what is thought to have been the birthplace of theatrical representations in Athens at Theater of Dionysus. Situated on the south slope of Athens' Acropolis, the oft-overlooked site dates back to the 4th century BCE. Although smaller and less restored than many of the city's ancient attractions, the open-air theatre has great historical significance. Wander through the remains of this mighty complex, which would have once seated an audience of 17,000, and imagine the spectacles that took place here. It's a good idea to bring some water and sun protection with you. Theater of Dionysus reviews
This is an important part of a visit to the Acropolis slopes. Although not completely restored, the lower levels of seating are complete and you are able to get a feel for how it must have looked... more »
It was a shame that the theatre was closed, but with Covid restrictions in place, you couldn't get in to see it. You could just glimpse it from the outside but it looked good. I will have to come... more »
Wonderful monument, partially being restored. Perfect location a short walk away from the Acropolis. Would recommend going all the way up to the top of the Acropolis first, earlier than later (before 10am), then traveling to the other stops as they won't be crowded by the time you get there.
On the slopes of Acropolis this theatre is definitely worth a closer look. It may not be as well preserved as the Epidauros theatre,A part of ancient Acropolis, this arena gives you a perception that these people really liked theatres. Just close your eyes and imagine the life of ancient people.
