Panathenaic Stadium, Athens

4.4
Reconstructed from the remains of an ancient stadium, Panathenaic Stadium serves as the only major sports venue in the world built entirely of white marble. The stadium, one of the oldest in the world, hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and now serves mostly as a venue for live concerts and archery events. Originally built on this site in 566 BCE and renovated several times over the centuries, the hairpin-shaped stadium could once seat about 80,000 spectators. Today, the fifty rows of marble steps have the capacity to receive about half as many visitors. Take a morning jog on the ancient track, or take self-guided audio tour of the entire stadium. • This was a short walk from our hotel. You are free to climb the seating and get on the field. It is amazing to know the history took places under your feet!  more »
  • The stadium Panathenaic is the only one of its kind because it is made of marble. In the past, athletic events have been carried out, with a host of around 75 000 fans. In his bowels there is also a smaller museum containing e.g. All Olympic fires. The stadium certainly recommend to visit, while the entrance is €6.

  • I love the Olympics so getting a chance to visit the first Olympic stadium was amazing for me. It's 5 euro in although if you really want to get in for free it's not too hard. If you pay you also get an audio guide which is good. Ignoring the history it's actually a really beautiful stadium made entirely of marble. The best parts is getting to get on the track and the medal rostrum! If you in anyway care about the Olympics this is a must visit.
