Benaki Museum, Athens

4.6
#3 of 73 in Museums in Athens
Set in a mansion belonging to the influential Bekanis family, Benaki Museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts reflecting Greek history and culture. Though primarily concerned with Greece, the museum explores and celebrates the many foreign influences that have enriched the country. Admire prehistoric pottery, Byzantine iconography, 17th century embroidery, and heirlooms of influential Greek figures. Make sure to stop by the on-site restaurant. Located on the top floor, it offers superb views of central Athens. • More of a mansion, of course, with a fine but rather expensive cafe on the second floor roof. Benaki clearly had wide ranging tastes and the museum is the place to see exhibits from all periods of Gre...  more »
  • I particularly loved the large collection of costumes, textiles, religious artefacts and jewellery which I have not seen in another museums. The building is beautiful and worth a visit.  more »

  • We went on a Thursday, which turned out to have free entry (!), and the museum is open until midnight, so we definitely felt this was very worth going. The museum itself is very cool, although a bit odd - most of the ground floor is all ancient Greek stuff (which was all great stuff, although probably more impressive if you haven't just come from the national Archaeological Museum!), but it then very rapidly transitions into Christian artwork, and then onto much more recent Greek history, including the war for independence on the top floor. We went in not knowing about any of the more recent history, so I don't think we got as much out of the more recent exhibits as we should have done.
  • Well laid out, authoritative, professional in every way. My focus was Byzantium, but the earlier antiquities are actually the museum's principal strength. Definitely worth visiting. Lovely gift shop and cafe as well.
