Acropolis of Athens, Athens

4.6
A cluster of ancient ruins of great architectural and historical significance, Acropolis of Athens has been the star attraction of Athens for many centuries and is a World Heritage Site. Sitting on a rocky hill just above the city, this age-old citadel contains ruins of temples constructed during the 5th century BCE. The "City on a Hill," as its name roughly translates, contains outstanding examples of Classical architecture that continues to influence the building styles of modern cities around the world. Although pollution and exposure to weather continue to take their toll on the ancient buildings, the historical hill remains an important reminder of the cultural influence and political power ancient Greece once exercised on the rest of the world. • Loved it here. But it's hot and no shade. There is water but it doesn't taste good. I'd advise to buy some. The toilets are not the best but at least there are some. The walking up is hard work mainly because the floor in parts is incredibly slippy being marble. So wear a hat & sensible foot wear and take water. It's amazing worth every penny and step.
  • Absolutely stunning views of the city. Despite all the construction/restoration, it is still such a beautiful site. The walk up seems incredibly long when it’s hot out. Definitely wear good walking shoes as some of the steps are marble and can be slippery. Had to bring lots of water for the walk as we only saw one water fountain on the way up. I will always visit this site because it is breathtaking! Can’t wait to go back again!
  • This is the most historic spot in the ancient works. It is a representative of man's ingenuity and his creativity. The history behind this air is the history of the city. The city, so named after the goddess Athena, has her temple on the highest point in the city. The Acropolis was also the last line of defense the people had when the city was under attack. It was the highest Hill on the center of the city and can thus be seen from every point in the city. The are many places throughout the city that you can see the Acropolis from. It is going to be a great view from wherever you see it, but it feels like the city was literally designed around it. From the temple of the Olympian Zeus to the highest rooftop bar, you can see the Acropolis. When I say that it is one of the pinnacles of achievement of the human race, it really is. You can see the dedication and the commitment the people had to their city and their patron goddess. I highly recommend that you go visit this site if you are in the city. It is a life experience that many cannot relate too
  • It sucked that half of the things were closed off for renovation/rehabilitation/construction but I guess you cant really complain about that in a place like this. Naturally its an amazing experience that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The best is that its free for EU students :)
  • Amazing. Must do. Evening is best when sun is setting. It's hot but there are water fountains at the top. Guides are strict. They whistle loudly at people. No dancing allowed! Then they herd everyone out at 7:45 even though there's plenty of daylight left. They should stay open till 9 in the summer.
