Once believed to be the entrance to an undersea passage between Europe and Africa, St. Michael's Cave today hosts concerts, ballets, and other cultural events in its large auditorium. A recently discovered Neolithic bowl proved that the cave was once occupied by prehistoric humans, long before its rediscovery in ancient Roman times. For centuries it was thought to be bottomless, which spawned various legends--such as the one connecting it to the gates of the underworld. At the far end of the main hall, look for the huge stalagmite that fell off the ceiling thousands of years ago. The cross-section revealing its interior structure will show you the natural history of the cave on a miniature scale. Beautiful place but watch out for the monkeys. Avoid going up the rock with any food or a backpack. The lights give the place a nice atmosphere. Great to learn about the history. more »

I fee the upper St. Michael’s Cave was pretty standard cave stuff if you’ve ever been in a cave before. Still pretty cool but if the entrance wasn’t included in my ticket, I wouldn’t have missed going in. The really cool bit is the Lower St. Michael’s Caves! That requires booking minimum 3 days in advance. Coat was 25 British pounds when we went (Dec 2019) and was worth every single penny of the 3 hour journey.

Stunningly beautiful, we were not prepared for how spectacular this was going to be when our guide pulled up. It’s pretty well lit, with colors projected onto the walls making for quite the display. I could’ve stayed in here mesmerized for hours, would recommend without hesitation.
