St. Michael's Cave, Gibraltar
Once believed to be the entrance to an undersea passage between Europe and Africa, St. Michael's Cave today hosts concerts, ballets, and other cultural events in its large auditorium. A recently discovered Neolithic bowl proved that the cave was once occupied by prehistoric humans, long before its rediscovery in ancient Roman times. For centuries it was thought to be bottomless, which spawned various legends--such as the one connecting it to the gates of the underworld. At the far end of the main hall, look for the huge stalagmite that fell off the ceiling thousands of years ago. The cross-section revealing its interior structure will show you the natural history of the cave on a miniature scale. St. Michael's Cave Reviews
The caves are just simply beautiful the lighting is wonderful and on a hot dat it's a great place to cool down more »
なかなか大きくて綺麗な鍾乳洞です。ただ、やたらと切り替わる派手なライトアップが魅力を半減している気がします。 more »It is a pretty big and beautiful cave. However, I feel that flashy light-up that switches profusely has halved the charm.
Nice cave network. Not as extensive as the other caves that we have visited but at the same time it was nice to be in a cave where it is not sweltering hot. I guess they have events inside the cave. Most caves are preserved but they allow this to be used as an event venue. Overall nice for a quick visit. Worth the price? Not so much.
So interesting and pretty. Once you get past the many Barbary Macaques (monkeys) that hang around the cafe/ shop near the entrance (some of the babies are so very cute!) you enter the cavern that is used for musical productions and other events. The lighting creates atmosphere, but the cave system f is really spectacular and great for kids to explore
