Explore the plant and animal life of the Rock of Gibraltar while enjoying scenic vistas by climbing Mediterranean Steps, the area's hidden gem. This rough, untouristed path meanders along the eastern face of the rock, through a natural reserve and past several natural caves and some World War II fortifications. The British constructed the steps as part of the army communication system--you can still see two 19th-century coastal defense guns along the way. The relatively challenging climb requires a reasonable level of fitness and isn't suitable for those with a fear of heights. Be prepared as its a very long hike down. Some of the steps are a bit slippery or in not so great condition. A little rough passing others. I also think I twisted my ankle a bit. If you have the time it might be worth it but I would probably recommend instead taking the cable car up and hiking down the roads by the siege tunnels and apes.

Amazing views! Did the walk down the steps and do not regret it. Wear sensible clothing and shoes. Some stones are slippery and sometimes you have nothing to hold on to, so take extra care! There is a lot to see on your way down, caves, flowers, apes and random building. You also get amazing views of the Rock and the sea. Recommend it if you are not afraid of heights! If you're unsure of the walk but want to give it a try, do it going down. The start is right by O'Hara Battery.
