Apes Den, Gibraltar

4.2
See the Rock's most famous inhabitants, Barbary macaques, at Apes Den. This small population of the only free-roaming primates in Europe came from North Africa long before the British did. Still, somehow a popular local legend has it that these two groups, if they ever leave, will leave together. These tailless monkeys (not apes) like to interact with humans, although they can be dangerous if irritated or scared. Used to being fed by people, the monkeys will use any opportunity to snatch food from your hands or open bags, so keep your belongings close. • The Apes den area is where the monkeys are fed by the authorities. They are as usual jumping around. The view from here is beautiful.  more »
  • We climbed with the cable car and as soon as we arrived we met the monkeys. The view is wonderful, unfortunately due to a cloud, we were unable to see Africa across the street. We also had two unpleasant incidents with the monkeys since a girl from the company opened the bag and grabbed a toiletry kit that had cell phone, glasses and some other stuff and threw them down while in another they were pulling his bag with a purpose to paro it. Uv. In some cases they become aggressive, so it takes a lot of attention. Keep your things close.

  • Absolutely loved it here, the macaques are very funny and absolutely everywhere. Definitely watch out as if you're not careful they'll take whatever they feel like from you - open your bags and take food, etc. Other than that they are quite friendly. The views here are absolutely spectacular, I was fortunate enough to be there on a sunny day and it was quite simply magnificent, where you look across the sea and get Spain in one direction, Morocco in the other and also can see down to most of Gibraltar. Well worth the visit. Also, I walked all they way. You need to be fit if you are going to do so, but much enjoyed it.
  • Love it 😎 😍 just watch out for monkey 🙊 taking your food and other things, they can smell easily and start attacking you. 😊 Other than that they're friendly and don't give food to them, you might get fine for it. Otherwise it is exciting long day trip.
