Apes Den, Gibraltar

4.2
#2 of 18 in Wildlife in Gibraltar
See the Rock's most famous inhabitants, Barbary macaques, at Apes Den. This small population of the only free-roaming primates in Europe came from North Africa long before the British did. Still, somehow a popular local legend has it that these two groups, if they ever leave, will leave together. These tailless monkeys (not apes) like to interact with humans, although they can be dangerous if irritated or scared. Used to being fed by people, the monkeys will use any opportunity to snatch food from your hands or open bags, so keep your belongings close. • Wild monkeys settle in The Rock in Gibraltar. It is the only wild monkey habitat in Europe. Monkeys are particularly hungry for food, and when they see food, they attack them, so you should put them in the back so that you can't see the food from the outside in the mountains. Please be careful because the monkey thinks that food is in the white plastic bag etc. and it catches, and the bag is broken. If you take a picture of a monkey, it will be a memorial.

  • Whilst in Gibraltar you really need to visit the apes as it was a fantastic experience. To see the apes in the wild and behaving naturally was superb. They were extremely friendly, if slightly scary at times as they do like to jump.on you and see what you have that they might like!! We walked up to the Apes which took about 50 minutes but was a long walk with some stunning views. It is obviously quite hilly but if you can manage it this is a great way to.do it.
  • Amazing place to come close to the monkeys. Really cool to see the little baby monkeys. Definitely worth it to go with a small tour (8 people) bus for 35€. Otherwise you have to walk A LOT! But if you want a nice hike, take the cable cars to the top and walk down.
