Walk through the ancient Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana at LVR-Archaologischer Park Xanten, Germany's biggest archaeological open-air museum. The town was established as a Roman military camp in 12 BCE, but, unfortunately, nothing remains from those times. Luckily, excavators and archaeologists have redesigned the major buildings in the park to the scale and architectural precision of the Roman originals. See the harbor temple, the amphitheater, the city walls and gates, and Roman houses as they would have appeared in their original places. A ticket to the park also gets you into the Roman Museum, which gives a history of the Roman life in the Lower Rhine area and contains the remains of the Town Baths. • This place is vast and in mid-summer, a visit may be quite unpleasant. Within the perimeter only a few objects can be visited although they are ancient, they are not of too much interest. However...  more »
  • Stopped off here for afternoon on way to ferry (Rotterdam). Impressive roman ruins and reconstructions on original roman town plan. Mostly outside so wrap up if need be. Be prepared for walking - but....  more »

  • Really quite splendid. My spouse and I took a trip to Xanten as history fans, and we were not disappointed in seeing this park! It's very spacious and perfect for a picinic, though we enjoyed the cafe and Roman dishes they served. There is a place to get and get coffee as well as a coffee shack, to satiate all dietary needs if you come unprepared as we did. Absolutely recommend this for people with kids!! There is a very fun play area. Pets are also welcome. Perfect family space; lots of benches and all you need to enjoy 2 or 6 hours here.
  • It was ok. You need a full day to see it all. And you can learn a lot about the romans anf their daily life.
