The oldest Gothic church in Germany, Liebfrauenkirche, Trier, along with Trier's cathedral and Roman monuments, is a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site. Built in the 13th century, the church is notable for its atypical cruciform floor plan as a round church resembling a 12-petal rose. In the 12 supporting columns, you'll find paintings of the 12 apostles, as well as the 12 articles of the Apostle's Creed. Due to damage during World War II, the church has been painstakingly restored with modern stained-glass windows that flood the vast hall with light and color on a sunny day. Liebfrauenkirche, Trier Reviews
Na de drukte van de stad en van het overweldigende van de dom, is dit een heerlijk rustpunt. Geniet van de zachte muziek en het zonlicht dat door de glas in loodarme valt. more »After the hustle and bustle of the city and of the overwhelming of the Duomo, this is a lovely resting point. Enjoy the soft music and sunlight that falls through the stained glass.
De to kirker er meget flotte. Tag også ud i den lille have hvor præsterne ligger begravet. Der sidder næsten altid en tigger ved døren. more »The two churches are very nice. Also, take in the small garden where the priests are buried. There is almost always a begging at the door.
Beautiful church. Truly massive. Unfortunately the hours are limited for visitation. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Pictures are welcome, but do be respectful and turn off any flash settings >_> I believe this is designated a world UNESCO site. Add it to your list of you're trying to check those places off! There are quite a few things to admire in this church, including glass windows, elaborate sculptures and masonry, as well as a few other typical Christian-themed art works.
The most fascinating thing about this church is the frescoes on the pillars! 12 pillars depict 12 apostles and 1 has Jesus Christ as the Man of Sorrows. These were originally painted in 15th C CE. Another thing that caught my eye was the 14th C wooden sculpture of Enthroned Madonna.
