Konstantinbasilika, Trier

4.1
A large, Protestant cathedral, Konstantinbasilika has been preserved from the era of Constantine the Great. Aula Palatina, or the Basilica of Constantine, was built by Emperor Constantine in 310 CE. Its large hall features an impressive high, unsupported ceiling that gives the place a sense of spaciousness and emptiness. It was restored in the 19th century and became a Protestant church but was damaged heavily during World War II. The historical decorations were not reconstructed; nevertheless, some exhibits and remnants of statues remain inside. • The preservation of antiquities can be compared only with the Roman Pantheon. And the fate is the same: they became churches, so they were not dismantled on stones for the palaces of medieval nobles. The hall impresses with power and architectural solutions. I never tire of admiring the skill of Roman architects and builders, who built buildings in the full sense of the word for centuries, if not millennia. Now the basilica is in the scaffolding, which prevents you from appreciating the facade. Only 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is open in winter, so plan this time of visit. Admission is free. There is a small exhibition about the fate of the building from the moment of construction to the present day.
