Rheinfels Castle, Sankt Goar

#1 of 8 in Things to do in Sankt Goar
Once the largest castle overlooking the Rhine, Rheinfels Castle once covered an area five times its current size. The majority of the actual castle is in ruins, but just outside the walls, you'll find a wellness center, hotel, and restaurant. The pathway under the clock tower just opposite the hotel is the castle's main entrance, and it will lead you to the earl's former quarters and the cellar. The 16th-century cellar is the largest self-supporting cellar in Europe at 16 m (52 ft) high and 24 m (79 ft) long. It is now used as a concert hall with a capacity for 400 people. In the chapel, a museum displays a history of the castle along with artifacts found on the site. A scale model of the castle's original ground plan showcases the forethought used in building a structure that could withstand lengthy sieges. • Just be aware that it is closed for the winter. My husband and I got there and were bummed to find this out, but there just so happened to be a local guide about to start a tour, so we tagged along...  more »
  • A nice walk up the hill and beautiful views but the castle is a ruin so not for bad weather.. If you don't want to walk around the castle ruins, spring for a drink in the hotel - also spectacular...  more »
  • Great views from this interesting, historical site. We did not do a tour but did a self-guided walk through the museum and grounds. Favorite spots included the tower and cellar. Can’t believe the cellar used to be the moat - you can even see the water ring. Spent only about an hour here; more than enough. If you are staying in St Goar, considering walking up the forested hiking trail instead of the busy road for an amazing nature walk of 25 minutes.
  • Am amazing place in a surreal setting. Recommend a visit in the evening as well. It looks totally different during sunset. The view of the river has a different hue. The restaurant there is also amazing and a coffee there by the window watching the river flowby is an experience in itself. To enjoy the castle a view from the riverside is also recommended. Whilst there don't forget to query about the cat and mouse castles too!!!
