  • Rastatt has two Baroque fountains that adorn the square between the town hall and the town church. Both are devoted to saints, according to the events and spirit of his time; They are the Alexius Fountain and the St. John von Nepomuk Fountain. In 1723 and 1728, Rastatt was shaken by earthquakes that caused fear and terror among the population. Such are moments when people locate the forces of nature as powers to which they are helplessly at the mercy. The magical thinking that the primitive humans developed becomes present. Whereas it used to be natural gods from which people hoped for protection and help, it was the Saints of the Church at that time who were to avert danger. The patron saint, to whom power over natural disasters was attributed, was embodied in Alexius. Under the circumstances, Margrave Ludwig Georg commissioned the construction of the Alexius Fountain in 1737, which was completed two years later. That the sense of a well should provide water to the population in advance only later got its real fulfillment. This was only about banishing the prevailing fear, as is clear from part of the Latin inscription: "Ludwig Georg, Margrave of Baden [...] This work has been built on Saint Alexius, so that he and his companies would be protected from the hostage of the earthquake. August Georg let the water flow in 1770 after his brother-in-law Ludwig Georg had built the work. " Legend has it that Alexius, son of a Roman patrician family, left the bride and paternal house on his wedding day to dedicate his life to God alone as a pilgrim and hermit. During a mighty storm, his sanctity proved when a statue of Mary began to speak of him in the church and the bells began to ring on their own. After years, he returned to live as a beggar under the stairs of his childhood home. It wasn't until he died that his family recognised him again. Even at his death, the bells rang by themselves. [...] The saint, as a pilgrim with his staff, stands on a mighty pedestal formed in the basic form of a four-sided pyramid. From a roughly created plinth, the curved sides rise over three steps. Strong edges, which are adorned in the upper paragraph of vases with sublime angel heads, stand by the Zier. Tape cornaments richly decorate the individual shapes. The fountain is assigned to the town hall, with which it is connected by the street axis, which leads on to the Nepomukbrunnen, the town church and the Bernhardbrunnen. A place that can offer something to art and well lovers as well as simply believers.

  • The Alexius Fountain is a piece of jewelry reminiscent of the threat of Rastatt and the help of the patron saint against earthquakes. The original thanksgiving monument, which has been converted into a fountain, joins the Rastatter weekly market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
