Architectural Building · Tourist Spot
If you've ever wondered what a Nazi beach resort might look like, visit KdF - Koloss von Ruegen, built between 1936 and 1939 to be just that. It consists of almost 5 km (3 mi) of bleak buildings stretching along the coast of RĂ¼gen. Hitler's vision for Prora was a gigantic sea resort with room for 20,000 vacationers. Plans for the resort were abandoned with the onset of World War II, and the buildings saw only sporadic use in the following decades, so remains were largely abandoned. Today, you can stay at the large youth hostel that has been opened on the site or visit the museum, which documents the history of the site and features items from the GDR.
