Trip Planner: Europe / Germany / Bavaria / Franconia / Middle Franconia / Nuremberg / St. Sebaldus Church
The location of St. Sebaldus Church in front of the Albrecht-Dürer-Platz is evidence of its central role in city's culture. One of the oldest and most important houses of worship in the region, it takes its name from Sebaldus, a hermit and missionary from the eighth century. The structure was originally a Romanesque basilica, but in the ensuing centuries, the aisles have been made wider and the steeples higher. Much of what you see inside was restored after World War II's bombing damage. However, the stained glass windows, the Shrine of St. Sebaldus, and the organs survived, so you can still enjoy the epic reverberation of the organ's 15th-century pipes. St. Sebaldus is really beautiful and, as far as we have heard, the oldest parish church in Nuremberg. The temple, which began construction eight hundred years ago, earned its name in honor of the Nask who lived in the city during the early Christian era. It took nearly fifty years to build an impressive church with a central Roman-style dish, and this was just the beginning of a long journey: research by scientists showed that the temple had been completed several times, expanded, and, as in the 15th century, two large towers were built.
