KZ-Gedenkstatte Mittelbau Dora, Nordhausen

Founded as a "sub-camp" for the Buchenwald concentration camp, KZ-Gedenkstatte Mittelbau Dora was a place of horrors. The memorial and museum you'll encounter on your visit help the public remember those who suffered at the camp and all they endured. Sub-camps were established as armor-manufacturing sites during World War II, so many of the relics you will see on display are tools, scrap metal, and other artifacts related to the construction of weapons. Before viewing these inside the tunnels where the prisoners worked, you'll walk through temporary exhibits that encourage visitors to take a critical look at history. Plan my Nordhausen trip by asking Inpirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • It shouldn't be forgotten that this was a concentration camp however there isn't much to see in the museum or remains of the camp itself, only the foundations of some of the buildings. Most people come for the underground tour where the conditions the poor inmates suffered are immediately seen. The tour consists of a substantial walk into the tunnel system which is a huge junkyard of remains of toilet blocks, bits of rockets, concrete, rails and pipes. No charge is made for any of the visit.
  • Why are people so cruel to do this. I recommend the audio guide instead of the guided tour, you will get more infomartion but you have to take the guided tour to go into the tunnels. So the best is to combine the two
