Nymphenburg Palace, Munich

4.5
While millions of tourists flock to the city for its world-famous beer festival, few find their way to the tranquil Nymphenburg Palace. Renowned architect Agostino Barelli designed this sprawling, 200 hectare (490 acre) garden oasis, which was completed in 1675. The palace once served as the summer residence of Bavarian kings. The facade was redesigned in the French Baroque style in 1716, and now is about 700 m (2,300 ft) wide. You can visit both the gardens and their several museums. The most notable one, inside the former royal stables, contains one of the biggest horse carriage collections in Europe. Regular guided tours aren't available, but you can pick up an informative audio guide at the site's entrance. • We were on tour and unfortunately we couldn't get to know the palace from the inside. We're just in the garden, which is huge. It's beautiful, no doubt. But I wouldn't say it's unmissable, since it's a little distant from the center. But if you have a chance to get to know the palace from the inside, for the photos I saw, I think it's worth going there.

  • Informative audio tour for the palace. So many people were sometimes tricky to see what the explanations were about and sometimes also difficult to hear with other audio tours in other languages. In the park and the various buildings in the park it was quieter. The park was a pleasant place during a very hot day. Well served by public transport.

  • Very cool place to visit on your trip to Munich. Fairly accessible by public transport (albeit a slight walk) and the gardens are beautiful. There is also a botanical garden that has an entry fee if you are interested. Plenty of benches along the park so a very nice place to have a snack or relax. Quite a few locals exercising through the park too. We saw some fish in the lakes and there is a gondola ride available too.
  • Take a walk around, look inside the lake , go into the castle, pose at various spots for pictures. You will have a time of your life. Definitely a tourist location
