See sculptures dating from the Archaic age (650 BCE) to the Roman era (550 CE) when you tour Glyptothek. Originally built for Bavarian King Ludwig I to hold his collection of Greek and Roman sculptures, this museum now holds famous sculptures from a wide range of periods. From the Archaic period, you can see the Munich Kouros and the Kouros of Tenea. From the Classical period, view the portrait of Homer and Statue of Diomedes. The Barberini Faun represents the Hellenistic period, while the bust of Emperor Augustus is from the Roman period. The museum includes a cafe. • We wanted to visit this Museum to enjoy fine ancient art. But unfortunately, one of the two buildings is being refurbished and it is closed. It turns out that the one that is closed is the one with the main ancient sculpture exhibits!. So I do not feel it is fair at all to charge the full price when only one house is open...and no guide plan is included. Nevertheless, beautiful pottery to admire.
  • The Glyptothek is current closed for renovations and will not be open again until 2021. I just wish the website mentioned it. Had it not been for the Propylaea and the Staatliche Antikensammlungen museum opposite Glyptothek, the day would've been a total loss. The entirety of the building is covered up during the renovations. At best, you can see the roof from the steps of Staatliche Antikensammlungen.
