A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Messel Pit Fossil Site is quarry filled an enormous number of well-preserved fossils. When miners were excavating the site for bituminous shale, the fossils--including birds, insects, reptiles, fish, hedgehogs, primates, and pangolins--came to light. Archeological discoveries are still being made here. You can tour the pit and the museum, but if you can't read German, consider hiring an English-speaking guide.
