Holstentor, a historical city gate, serves not only as an icon of Lübeck but also as a museum about the city's history. Originally built in the 15th century, it is one of the relics of Lübeck's medieval city fortifications. Spend time admiring the gate before entering the museum, and look for the Latin inscription, which translates to "Harmony within, peace without." Step inside to explore seven rooms that focus mainly on Lübeck's trade history. Squeamish visitors should skip the Holsten Gate exhibit, which contains medieval torture instruments. The sagging towers are well worth the trek. History oozes from every brick and the tor is a great gateway to the old town. more »
While this monument is very impressive on the outside, no visit to Lübeck would be complete without a visit to the museum inside. You gain a better understanding as to the original purpose of this structure as well as the time period it was built. Be prepared to walk up steps in both towers (no elevators) but this is part of the charm of Holstentor.
The museum is beautiful. Lots of interesting displays and historical items with descriptions. Many, but not all, descriptions are in English in addition to German. The souvenir shop has guided in many other languages too. The access is spiral stairs so not easy access if you aren't very mobile.
