Koenigstein Fortress, Koenigstein

#8 of 147 in Historic Sites in Saxony
Must see · Castle · Tourist Spot
One of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe, Koenigstein Fortress is an architecturally and historically significant building. During its more than 750 years, the fortification featured late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th-century architecture. Its 50-odd buildings, some more than 400 years old, are testament to the civilian and military life of the fortress. For centuries, the structure was used as a state prison, but today it is home to an open-air museum that documents the history of the castle, with exhibitions on the old armory, the garrison church, the cellars, and the treasury. • Nothing less than amazing! A must see! The fortress itself is stunning. The exhibit about life in the fortress and it's evolution is great. We had our five year old with us and he also liked it. We spent five hours at the fortress. There's so much to see. The view of the surrounding landscape is amazing. Food was expensive, bring your own. Don't pay for the "train" to the top, it's a short walk.
  • That's an amazing place! The walls impress from the beginning even from far. On the top there's really as if a little city that is very interesting to discover. Walking on the fortress walls and admiring the view on the valley can take hours though if it's fast only 20 min. Definitely worth visiting!
