  • What is the wonderful cycling along the Moselle! Beautiful cycling paths, beautiful towns. But also along the Deutsches Eck and along the Rhine the miracle is clean. Want a nice cycling holiday? Then this is a must

  • After my wife and I had already travelled several bike paths on rivers, we finally wanted to get to know the Moselle bike path. Originally it was planned to start from the Moselle spring in Alsace, which we could have reached from our place of residence in one day with the pedelecs. However, we rejected this idea again, as we had had bad experiences with the wheel return transport by rail. So we decided to drive the private car and our pedelecs on the rear carrier to the Luxembourg border and leave the car there. After a first night at the Central Hotel "Greiveldinger" we started on September 10 towards Koblenz. After only a few kilometres, the well-developed cycle path meandered along the Moselle on the right. Over Palzem and Konz we reached Trier after 63 km in the early afternoon. Signs about cultural attractions on the river and the sculptures of the Italian sculptor Claudia Marina Farina near Konz made the trip extremely entertaining. And then Trier: The bike path leads a straight way to the Porta Nigra, that monumental Roman city gate from the 2nd century AD. Here is an (incomplete) list of the main sights, all of which can be explored by bike: Main market with market fountain and stilau, picture house, cathedral with St. Rock Chapel, Constantine Basilica, princely palace with palace garden, barbarian garms and Imperial Baths, ampiteaters, etc. In the evening we stayed at "Schroeder's Stadtwald Hotel," about 3 km outside the city center. We had foolishly pre-ordered this hotel on the internet without knowing that the access via a road to Bitburg is more than 2 km steep. Even with our pedelecs, that was a shingle in heat. We ordered the next three quarters by phone in the early afternoon, when we knew how far we were going, with the help of tourist offices. The second day took us from Trier to Pfalzel, Longuich, Leiwen to Piesport (63 km). Left hand the volcanic Eifel, on the right the mountains of the Hunsrücks accompany the Moselle cycle path. In Piesport, we took quarters in the "Moselloreley," an idyllic hotel-restaurant winery just off the bike path overlooking the Moselle into the vineyards. On the third day we drove over Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach to Bullay (about 70 km). Bernkastel-Kues is worth seeing because of its half-timbered buildings, but even in mid-September it is still crowded by tourists. Under the high-moselle bridge under construction between Ürzig and Zeltingen-Rachtig we went on to Traben-Trarbach. Opposite the gate bridge is a food stall with highly recommended sausages, meatballs, etc. The bike path took us further past the Mont Royal fortress to Bullay. We did not like the overnight accommodation "Moselinchen": A villa, inhabited by an elderly couple, d ...
