Schloss Wilhelmshohe, Kassel

One of Germany’s most beautiful Rococo palaces--and the site of one of the world's largest Rembrandt collections--Schloss Wilhelmshohe was built between 1786 and 1798 among extensive gardens that are typical to the late Baroque period. Tour the palace to see the fully furnished imperial apartments, or spend some time exploring the grounds. The middle section of the castle, mostly destroyed during World War II, was rebuilt as an art museum in the early 1970s. Examine the antiquities and graphic arts collections, as well as the Gallery of the Old Masters. If you have time, hike to the top of the hill, where a statue of Hercules presides over the city below.
