Munsterplatz, Freiburg im Breisgau

Munsterplatz represents the heart of Freiburg. The square's medieval-era surroundings include the Merchants Hall and Archbishop's Palace. The intricate fish fountain at its center is an exact replica of the 15th-century original. The Munster Cathedral on the square miraculously survived bombing in 1944. Grab a meal or snack at one of the nearby bars or cafes, or simply relax and people-watch. Don't miss a chance to wander the famous farmers market held here nearly every day. • early in the morning it is in my eyes m most beautiful. The dealers lovingly set up their stalls, there is a family and rural atmosphere on the square. You know each other, you talk to each other, you exchange ideas... a relaxed experience. From 10 a.m. on, the crowd and shoving of people between the narrow corridors of the market starts - a time I prefer to escape. The wind (hell valleys) is often ice cold on the square, so even in midsummer it is better to take a jacket with you. Every Saturday there is a nice, free organ concert for every interested person and a small market devotional, which is suitable to bring a little peace and thoughtfulness into the bustle. Climbing the renovated bell tower is always worthwhile. From there you have a magnificent view over the whole Münsterplatz, the city, the Kaiserstuhl, the Vosges or the Schlossberg. Nothing for people with reduced mobility or untrained people, not even for the severely overweight: the spiral staircase is very narrow and you always have "counter-traffic". As it was hundreds of years ago, the square is the vibrant heart of the city.

  • It is a pretty and lively Le Matin square with its flower and vegetable market. The buildings around are nice to look at. Family atmosphere.
