Fraueninsel, Fraueninsel im Chiemsee

#13 of 172 in Outdoors in Upper Bavaria
Must see · Outdoor Activity
The smallest municipality in all of Bavaria, Fraueninsel (also known as Frauenchiemsee)--a small, car-free island--spans only 12 hectares (30 acres) and has approximately 250 inhabitants and just over 50 houses. Take a ferry to the island, and then go on a leisurely, 20-minute walk along the quiet shoreline of Lake Chiemsee. A monastery founded in 782 CE+F46, open to visitors, covers nearly one-third of the island. Pick up some of the famous Kloster liquor, which is produced by the monastery's nuns.
