Ettal Abbey, Ettal

Ettal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the village of Ettal close to Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany. With a community of more than 50 monks, with another five at Wechselburg, the Abbey is one of the largest Benedictine houses and is a major attraction for visitors.
Middle Ages and Early Modern periodEttal Abbey was founded on 28 April 1330, Saint Vitalis of Milan's day, by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian in the Graswang valley, in fulfilment of an vow, on his return from his coronation in Rome, on a site of strategic importance on the primary trade route between Italy and Augsburg. The foundation legend is that Ludwig's horse genuflected three times on the site of the original church building, where a marble statuette of the Madonna and Child ("Frau Stifterin" or the "Ettal Madonna") now stands. The statuette was brought by Ludwig from Pisa as a gift for his new foundation. It soon became an object of pilgrimage. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.
The foundation originally consisted of a Benedictine double monastery – a community for men and another for women – and also a house of the Teutonic Knights.

  • After prior notification, we were excited to see the tour in a real monastery brewery. The Hannes a true Garmisch-Partenkirchener offered us a guided tour that left nothing to be desired. Historically, historically, professionally and very humanely, he explained and showed us everything. His humour and wit were forceful and I as a Berliner must say ... He always stood up to me. Nor does he shy away from "mixed" groups. Speaks perfect among others Spanish Italian and English. The free beer tasting did its rest. Who is visiting the monastery of Ettal ... This brewery guide is a must.

  • It is gorgeous. Very well kept. Lovely shop with food and none food items. The signage to get to the public entrance of the brewery or cheese shop could be much improved.  more »
  • Stopped by while staying in Oberammergau and I was not disappointed! Breathtaking interior and a beautiful exterior in the snow. Recommend sitting inside the church for a bit to take it all in. Also, the limited edition beer in the gift shop was delicious!
  • Great place to visit, beautiful church and site. Almost a 800 years of history. We stopped to view the church, most beautiful one i believe I have seen. After went their 1331 cafe and brewery, happened a Beer tasting, best Beer ever. Luckily to have found. I understood they have a gift shop, we were too late and missed it.
