  • The Heimatbrunnen was donated by the Heimatverein der "Düsseldorfer Jonges" on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. On a pentagonal floor plan there are five conical columns. Each of the columns bears a square relief plate, each connected by wide bronze rings. The relief plates depict five major events in Düsseldorf's city history. Whether these are also the most important ones, one can argue about it perfectly, even without being a historian. The first record shows the award of town rights by Count Adolf von Berg. On the second, Elector Jan Wellem poses in front of the city castle and examines drawings. This is about the so-called extensions, the planned expansion of the city. On the third relief Napoleon rides past the Berger Tor. A reminder of the time of the French occupation during the Napoleonic wars. The fourth record deals with the bourgeois revolution of 1848. On the last relief you can see how the new Düsseldorf grows out of the ruins of the Second World War. Symbolized by the construction cranes protruding into the sky and the three-pane house. Between the individual relief plates, the heads of important Düsseldorf can be seen on smaller plaques. Among them the poet Heinrich Heine and the industrialist Fritz Henkel. One is divided on the choice of events depicted. Actually, only the positive events are presented here. The dark sides of German history and city history are lost here. Neither the bloody struggles during the Nobember Revolution, nor the invasion of French troops during the occupation of the Ruhr, nor the persecution and deportation of the Düsseldorf Jews to the concentration camps during the Nazi dictatorship are discussed here. Nevertheless, a beautiful fountain, where there is almost always something new to discover. As endless as the water flows in this well, so is the history. And we're experiencing the life of history. On a large scale, but also on a small scale.
