Bremer Stadtmusikanten is a bronze statue of four stacked animals by Gerhard Marcks depicting the Town Musicians of Breman. In the lore of the Brothers Grimm, a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster left their farms and owners, deciding to head off together--as their own masters--to become musicians. Along their journey to Breman, they notice burglars in a cottage. They stand on one another's backs to see in the window, making a racket to scare away the burglars. Long story short: The animals end up living in the cottage (which isn't actually in Breman), fat and happy, for the rest of their days. Similar statues are in front of each of Germany's five veterinary schools. Put Bremer Stadtmusikanten on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Bremen holiday site.

I wasn't familiar with this tale until now. Interesting story. Very famous statue right next to the Town Hall. Lots of people lined up to take pictures with it more »
A well known German fairy tale. Apparently if you rub on the donkey both front legs, your wishes are said to come true. Hence, you'll see the donkey shining front legs. more »
I lived in Bremen for six months in 1996, and visited it many times after that. I always miss the town, the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), the market, with its old fabulous monuments, including the Town Musicians of Bremen (die Bremer Stadtmusikanten).
Nice sculpture of the most famous thing in Bremen.
