Heimat-Tierpark Olderdissen, Bielefeld

Lovely zoo, with animals that are living in Germany in the wild as well. Well presented, with explanation about their preservation status. Only German. Ice cream shop, restaurants, toilets available. Lovely playground for small kids, worth at least half a day.

Interesting free zoo, open 24/7. We visited during the afternoon, when facilities were open. European animals, many birds, several different grazing animals and some carnivores. Cats were not visible, but the afternoon is not the best time for them. The brown bears were, as was the wolverine, after a bit of searching. Most of the grazing animals could be fed with special feed bought at the zoo, and they are thus used to people and often come to check whether you bring food. For people with less mobility, it is not always easy. Near the facility buildings there are cobble stones and some of the paths are steep. The special toilet I saw is inside the restaurant, and thus only available during the opening hours of the restaurant. All information is in German as is the available brochure.
