Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Berlin

4.5
Originally opened in 1895, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church today stands as a memorial to the destruction of World War II. This historic chapel was damaged--then almost completely eliminated--by bombings in 1943 and 1945. The remaining Romanesque architecture is in the steeple, which no longer has a pointed roof. The ground floor's memorial hall honors war victims. The people of Berlin preserved the ruins within the monument to represent the rebirth and resilience of postwar Berlin. • I can't do anything with modern architecture. For me, it is cold and hard and inhumane. The ruins of the old church can be preserved, including by name, to remind us that the representatives of the monarchy have been overtaken by democracy.

  • The church of Emperor William is truly beautiful ! It is located near the Zoo and the metro stop. The walls that frame it are beautiful !

  • A must see! I would encourage you to take the time and read the story of the life of this church. The material gave me a fresh point of view as to the impetus of what was to develop in Germany. The building is as beautiful as it is tragic. Admission is free! We also had the privilege to enjoy an evening with the Berlin Orchestra in the modern church next door. A lovely night.
  • This church is separated in two parts. The first being the actual church where you can see the original works and mosaics. The second building I almost ignored it, but thank goodness I stumbled in. Such beautiful blue stained glass windows which have an unusual effect inside the space. Completely different to a 'typical' church!
