Regarded as one of the country's most elegant squares, Gendarmenmarkt is dominated by two domed cathedrals and the city's renowned concert hall. The square was created in the 17th century, then massively reconstructed and expanded in 1773 by architect Georg Christian Unger. This public space was named after an 18th-century regiment consisting of French Huguenot immigrants, whose story you can explore at the museum inside the imposing French cathedral. Though many of the historic structures were damaged or destroyed during World War II, the buildings have since been fully restored. Be sure to climb the cathedrals' towers for views of the historic parts of the city. I visited this place because some blogs said it would be one of the prettiest places of Berlin. Honestly I disagree but it might be because there is a lot of construction work going on. There are two.... more »
Lots of nice buildings & a lovely large square but I found it largely the same as it was when we first visited, in 1991; quite soulless! more »
In A Nutshell: -Gendarmenmarkt is an awesome Christmas Market in Berlin. -It's a small square situated between a couple of iconic buildings which act as the perfect backdrop during winter. -Enjoy many food stalls serving the best German comfort foods while sipping on some mulled wine. -There is a stage that is set-up w/ performances by Santa & others. -You can even find pop-up restaurants that serve amazing foods. Overall, this is a great Christmas Market, it's small & crowded but worth checking out while you are in Berlin!
I was stunned by how amazing this place was it was loads of fun exploring the place and there were plenty of places to sit down and get a drink or walk around with one. This place was huge with a very vibrant and happy atmosphere and everyone around was super friendly! I will drop one star as this didn't effect us as we get there early but as we were leaving the queues were immense and I feel bad for anyone having to wait in them.
