Regarded as one of the country's most elegant squares, Gendarmenmarkt is dominated by two domed cathedrals and the city's renowned concert hall. The square was created in the 17th century, then massively reconstructed and expanded in 1773 by architect Georg Christian Unger. This public space was named after an 18th-century regiment consisting of French Huguenot immigrants, whose story you can explore at the museum inside the imposing French cathedral. Though many of the historic structures were damaged or destroyed during World War II, the buildings have since been fully restored. Be sure to climb the cathedrals' towers for views of the historic parts of the city. • The square of tolerance, rather impossible. At all hours you can enjoy your relaxed and elegant atmosphere, full of music. Walking late in the afternoon is priceless and free!!!

  • This is a beautiful square in the heart of the city with 3 historic buildings: The French Cathedral, The German Cathedral and the Concert Hall. This is well worth a visit, either day or evening.  more »

  • I can’t believe there is always beautiful classical music spread in the air from an open window of some rehearsal happening around there.... very nice Christmas market too.
  • The Christmas market here is one of my favourite. It usually opens towards the end of November and it's a must for any mulled wine lover in the area 👌 They also have a stand in particular selling beautiful Christmas decorations and even a little stage with either baked or classical music going on in the evening. I definitely recommend it!
