Old Town (Altstadt) Tbilisi, Tbilisi

4.7
At the heart of the capital, Old Town (Altstadt) Tbilisi boasts an eclectic mix of new and ancient buildings in a rainbow of colors, set against the looming bulk of Narikala Fortress. Devastated by an invading army charging north from Persia in 1795, much of the area was painstakingly rebuilt and restored in the mid-19th century while the country was under Russian rule (although many buildings and churches dating from the 5th century still exist here). Notice the carved wooden balconies on large houses that hang over the pavement as you stroll the narrow streets and alleyways in search of an ancient church or two. Other places of interest include the area's popular sulfur baths. Plan your Old Town (Altstadt) Tbilisi visit and explore what else you can see and do in Tbilisi using our Tbilisi trip planner .

  • Behind each turn it is possible to meet tiny shops and confectionery, café or the house with a balcony in the form of a trolley with flowers, the ancient houses in which the famous people lived. Here only commemorative boards all exclusively in the Georgian language-neither Russian nor English text is not present. It's a pity. We found a tiny pastry "Eskimo" with homemade cakes and cake. The hotel is located near the Rustaveli Avenue in the Podvalchik-unusually tasty! Still have lunch in the restaurant Saoli 11-recommend, but the evening must be booked in advance, there are no seats.

  • Connoisseurs say that the old town is built in Moorish style. I don't know. Nothing I can say but the fact that this area is a must-visit is for sure. Small winding streets, breed paved, running Italian courtyards, ceremonial and houses.... but everything is extremely racy. Beautiful carving, forging, painting.... And everything is permeated by a spirit of love, time and tranquility
