Known as the heart of the town, Abbaye Saint-Philibert is a fortress-style Benedictine Abbey established in 950 A.D. The building boasts some of the first Romanesque building styles in Burgundy, from when they began to use Romanesque and early Gothic styles at the beginning of the 11th century. In the 17th century, the 33m (108 ft) long refectory doubles as an early indoor tennis court. • Gorgeous abbey. Luckily we had a French speaker with us, as no English translations were available. We enjoyed our visit greatly.  more »
  • Do not avoid visiting here. Unless you speak fluent French get an audio guide. Wonderful arches on top of massive columns. Mosaics a plenty and don't miss the crypt.  more »
  • One of the most amazing churches I have been to, and I have been to hundreds or thousands of them. Beautifully restored, but not too much changed from its original state. Wonderful natural light. Not too crowded. Amazing architecture. Interesting, beautiful town that is not too touristy (at least in January, when I visited). Great, inexpensive lunch at the restaurant just outside (to the south of) the main entrance. If you like old buildings or Romanesque architecture, you should not miss Tournus.
  • Wonderful Abbey, there was a wedding today and I was thinking how lovely to marry here. To walk around and see how old but well preserved it is, a lovely little town on the Soane river. A pleasure to visit.
