Basilique Saint-Sernin, Toulouse

4.6
A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, Basilique Saint-Sernin has undergone significant renovations over the past 40 years to make it a worthy pilgrimage site on the route of St. James. One of its main attractions is a contemporary bust sculpture of John Paul II. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the basilica features a bell tower, 12th-century mural paintings, a crypt, a treasure trove, and the can’t-miss marble altar dating back to 1096 CE, when it was directly consecrated by Pope Urban II. If you're lucky, you'll hear a talented organist play the circa 1888 grand Cavaillé-Coll organ. • A must-see in Toulouse, the basilica is a majestic building that impresses with its dimensions. In addition to the free visit, for 2.50 euros you can access the walkway and admire the hunts and chapels as well as the crypt and its relics. A must-see.

  • This basilica is for us the most beautiful religious building in Toulouse. You can't describe her because she's so beautiful. Not to be ignored in the visit of this city.

  • Certainly the most beautiful cathedral in Toulouse, and a crypt well worth a visit. I'd love to know how the place was lit back in the days before electricity. Definitely some serious candles suppliers would have been necessary. Beautifully cool in the heat of summer months, but bone chillingly cold during winter. The architecture and decoration of the cathedral is stunning. Especially the 18th century altar and canopy. Certainly a must-see in Toulouse.
  • This Basilica located in the heart of Toulouse is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The architecture is very beautiful and it is one of the places to visit if you ever find yourself in Toulouse. It is somewhere in between the Capitol and the Daurade Bay. Therefore, there's no excuse if you don't visit this piece of ingenuity.
