Trip Planner: Europe / France / Grand Est / Bas-Rhin / Strasbourg / Protestant Church of St. Peter the Younger
Built from 1031 to 1053, Protestant Church of St. Peter the Younger is the site of a Merovingian chapel. You can still see the base of the bell tower, porch, and a number of walls from the original Romanesque building. Be sure to view the 14th-century frescoes, the tribune, and the cloister, where the remains of 11th-century columns can still be admired. The cloister has three galleries in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, with more than 90 tombstones and epitaphs dating back to the 14th to 18th centuries. Though heavily restored, many people consider this the oldest preserved cloister north of the Alps. Protestant Church of St. Peter the Younger reviews
Make sure you drop into to pray or reflect in this beautiful, old Cathedral. It was Christmas time and they had a wonderful display of baby Jesus. more »
Half protestant and half catholic, this is a very unusual church with plenty of interesting features. Parts of it are in real need of restoration, so worth a visit and helping to support. more »
Amazing medieval church, very well maintained, moves yourself to hundreds of years ago. If you are lucky might find someone playing the ancient pipe organ during your visit. Pay attention to the details, there are paintings and history everywhere. Enjoy the peace and the beauty of this stunning place!
Beautiful Church! If you only had time to see one church in Strasbourg, it is this one. The locals think so, too. The frescoes are lovely. I visited during the evening so it was too dark to go outside into the cloisters, but my Airbnb host raved about it like one would for a good restaurant. Opening hours around Christmas were: 12h-18h everyday, closed Monday Tuesday, Wednesday until 16th December 2018.
