Les Grottes Petrifiantes, Savonnieres

2.2
#3 of 10 in Nature in Indre-et-Loire
You can walk through the two caves at Les Grottes Petrifiantes that were mostly formed during the Middle Ages. The stone (tuffeau) was quarried to build a nearby ch√Ęteau. Romans were present in the caves as evidenced by the discovery of their pottery, manual mills, and a graveyard with seven gravestones remaining. Centuries later, the caves flooded with water, slowly creating new passages. Objects placed under the grottoes' springs for six months to a year get covered in limestone, creating a petrified appearance. • The guided tour of the grottes was in French, but the guide was sufficiently clear that we could understand most of what was being said. The caves are worth a visit.  more »
