Les Grottes Petrifiantes, Savonnieres

#3 of 9 in Nature in Indre-et-Loire
Geologic Formation · Cave
You can walk through the two caves at Les Grottes Petrifiantes that were mostly formed during the Middle Ages. The stone (tuffeau) was quarried to build a nearby château. Romans were present in the caves as evidenced by the discovery of their pottery, manual mills, and a graveyard with seven gravestones remaining. Centuries later, the caves flooded with water, slowly creating new passages. Objects placed under the grottoes' springs for six months to a year get covered in limestone, creating a petrified appearance.
