Caves Louis de Grenelle, Saumur

#1 of 36 in Wineries in Pays de la Loire
Taste a little sparkle--sparkling wine, that is--in a 15th-century limestone quarry at Caves Louis de Grenelle. The tuffeau limestone mined by prisoners of war provided the material that built many châteaux and houses in the Loire Valley. However, once the houses were built and the prisoners released, it was time to celebrate with a little bubbly; and that’s exactly what Louis de Grenelle and his family did. The caves are now used to age the precious grape essence in perfect atmospheric conditions. See bottles lining the chalky walls, waiting for their time to shine. The winery is still owned and managed by the family of Louis de Grenelle, who follow time-honored methods of fermentation established in 1859 by Louis himself. • We have been coming here for a long time annually to taste and buy. The sparkling wine here is of high level. This year we taste something new.. The Rose SEC. We had also seen the SEC in Leclerc. And there he was cheaper. The saleswoman tells us that the 2 secs are different and indeed. The sparkling wine at Louis D GREN is the better. This from Leclerc is called Morgane and with Louis D GR. CORAIL. For the rest Nice winery.

  • Visit the winery as part of the heritage days, very good visit with the guide followed by a tasting more than complete of the Louis de Grenelle range. I recommend if you go through it!

  • The tour down into the cave where the Sparkling Wine is produced and stored was truly amazing! I had no idea that making sparkling wine was such a long process! We saw thousands of bottles stacked along the walls in various stages of the process to to become sparkling wine.
  • Brilliant visit and lovely place, took a lot of bottles home to the uk.
