Founded in 1047 by Geoffrey II, Count of Anjou, Abbaye aux Dames was the premier Benedictine abbey built for women. The abbey has been associated with several important figures, such as Agnes de Barbezieux, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Madame de Montespan. It was declared a historic monument in 1948, and is nestled in the Arch of Germanicus.
