Omaha Beach, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer

4.7
#1 of 62 in Outdoors in Calvados
Overlooked by bluffs which rise to 46 m (150 ft) and command the beaches, Omaha Beach possesses naturally strong defensive positions. During World War II, the Germans skillfully fortified this area with concrete gun emplacements, anti-tank guns, and machine guns. Allied bombs left these largely undamaged, and since there was no cover on the sand, the tranquil strand became a killing field on D-Day, when the US 1st Infantry Division had the most difficult landing of the whole Allied assault. Omaha Beach is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer Edition.

  • The beach is beautiful there were people bathing although the truth is that after everything we saw there was no desire to bathe in it is a rather place to walk and reflect on human barbarism

  • My father came ashore here 28 days after D Day. It is incredibly moving when you learn of the history and sacrifice of our troops.  more »
