Place du Vieux-Marche, Rouen

#7 of 95 in Things to do in Rouen
Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Located in a city that traces its roots back to ancient Rome, Place du Vieux-Marche is most famous as the site where the English burned St. Joan of Arc at the stake. Today, it's hard to picture that gory scene in such a charming square, bordered by historical houses and cafes. As a reminder of the past, you can visit the square's large modern church, dedicated to St. Joan of Arc. Finished in 1979, it's built to represent an upturned Viking ship. The Vikings were among the groups that played an important part in settling the city.
