Basilique St-Sauveur, Rocamadour

#5 of 15 in Things to do in Rocamadour
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Built from the 11th to the 13th centuries, directly into the cliff face, Basilique St-Sauveur is the largest church at Cite Religieuse. This Romanesque Gothic house of worship has decorations, paintings, and inscriptions deatiling many of its notable visitors, including Philippe the Handsome. When you enter, look up to see one of the world’s oldest known clocks--from the 8th century--hanging from the ceiling. The working confessionals feature ornately carved wooden ornamentation. The church has the typical orientation popular during the transition period, facing the rising sun. • Very beautiful church up high in Rocamadour. There are lots of stairs and the place was quite crowded. Everyone wore masks, but people were still very close! Still a must see!  more »
  • Definitely worth a visit and stroll around. It is worth researching first otherwise you could miss something!  more »
  • If you park in the valley and enter the small village first, which I highly recommend, you can get some souvenirs and food. Before you enter the cathedral afterwards, you need to use the stairs (takes 3 minutes). It's a nice cathedral so worth taking a look. Then there is a 10-15 minutes long walk to the top/the Castle but honestly: the Castle is too expensive for what you get, just enjoy the view at other places during the walk to the top. And if you start in the valley, don't use that little train to the village because walking is almost faster (and free).
  • Fabulous medieval city hanging on the side of the cliff. Old streets packed with restaurants and shops. You can walk along a 12 stations Via Dolorosa and the castle on the top can be visited.
