  • Course full of discoveries in this train that passes through mountains and valleys, to be nice to the high country of Tende - pass at more than 1000 m the path climbs following the winding path of several mountain rivers, it runs along steep gorges where it dominates the course of torrents, offering insights into the threads of the valleys and peaks of several tens of meters. It crosses streams and steep ravines on dozens of bridges, viaducts, up to 60 m high, works of art in the 1920s (some rebuilt a century later after the destruction of the war), which are fine examples civil engineering. Among the various services per day in both directions (TER PACA region), 9:17 from Nice-Ville arriving at Tende at 11:24, is accompanied by the summer by a speaker who presents the story of the construction of the line, technical difficulties overcome and strategic issues in this region. She comments on the history of the villages where the train does step, pointing out some important in the trade of salt on mules for centuries between the Mediterranean and the Piedmont, for others their cloth industry and their craft, for others their monuments, medieval houses and baroque churches. If we stop at stations on the road before resuming a following train or stay a few days, we can visit the villages perched in floors overlooking the Valley, passes on the Roya, with old houses or painted chapels, which are also the start of hiking trails, or settlements on the River as l ' Escarène crossed by train in a long viaduct. The second part of the line between Breil on Roya and Tende, is also borrowed by the Italian trains that connect Ventimiglia to Cuneo and Turin, which allows to other circuits. You can visit two railway museums installed in buildings of stations, that of Breil on Roya (open in the summer afternoon) that has explanatory panels on the history of the construction of the line, locomotives and a model of the line which in shows the reliefs, and Peillon-Holy-Thecla (open by appointment at the tourist information Office), which has older documents on line and on the PLM company, including many plans and photos and re-enactments of era. The traveler will see the technical overview of how he experimented by train, traced in curve, gradients, sometimes exceeding the usual 2% maximum for gaining height, viaducts construction bold alternating with passages by tunnels , which some coil through the damaged reliefs. This excursion will as well appeal to travelers interested in railway construction to regional history and heritage enthusiasts and hikers, who will find impressive views of the mountain scenery.
