Soaring stained glass windows beam a myriad of colored light onto the floor's rich tile mosaics inside Sainte-Chapelle. This house of worship is one of the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period Gothic architecture, and retains one of the most extensive collections of 13th-century stained glass anywhere in the world. Built by the French kings to house the relics of the Crown of Thorns, this "jewel box" structure has two levels and an impressive vaulted ceiling. Probably the most beautiful church I have ever been to. Can get a little crowded as the space isn't big and the staff will shush the crowd if it gets too noisy more »
You can't buy tickets at the gate anymore. You need to check in early at the computer or with the DuckTheLine app. That said, it's definitely worth the trip to the top but you'll need to be ready to do some climbing. You'll first go up to the ticket lobby, then to a mid-level viewing area where you can go inside a bell tower and see into a bell, then finally go to the top of the tower, where the staircase gets really skinny. Great views from there.
Saint Chapelle is a smaller chapel compared to others, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful! My boyfriend and I went this past summer and it was better than what we anticipated. We bought our tickets at a kiosk and had to come back at a later time, keep in mind you cannot buy tickets at the gate. Definitely worth the wait and be prepared to climb some steps!
