The oldest planned square in Paris, Place des Vosges is a quiet spot surrounded by cafes and shops. Listen to the trickle of water from one of the four fountains while sitting at a bench. Henri IV built this perfect square 140 sq m (460 sq ft) from 1605 to 1612 to use as a royal pavilion for duels. Green lawns radiate out from its center. Expertly manicured lindens surround a formal plantation of mature linden trees called a bosquet, which provide a shady oasis. • Place des Vosges is the oldest and by many considered the most beautiful in Paris. It has the shape of a square, Wkolo beautiful townhouses. There is a park with the monument of Louis XIII and fountains. Be sure to see.

  • It is 1605, the King of France Henry IV ( 1553-1610), decides to build a place of pageantry and parties on the site of the former Hotel des Tournelles, in what is already called "Le Marais" (former muddy bed of the Seine filled in the Middle Ages). A Royal Edit requires buildings to be built to specific standards, two-storey buildings on arcaded gallery, covered with blue slate roof with steep slope. Stone-cut façade with red brick chaining ornaments, high windows with small tiles, etc. Two higher pavilions, the King's pavilion in the south and the Queen's pavilion on the other hand, serve as a passageway for the two access streets (Birague and Béarn). The architectural unity of the square, is a real curiosity that delights the viewer. The arcades are home to shops, art galleries, schools, chic restaurants and brasserie cafes. Victor Hugo's House, is located at the south-east corner of the square at No. 6 In the center, a large walled garden, shaded with water jets and lawns, allows you to rest and enjoy the exceptional setting. The statue of Louis XIII (1601-1643) on horseback, son of Henry IV, which dates from 1825, sits in the center under a group of chestnut trees. The name place of the Vosges , dates from 1800 to honor the department of Vosges which, during the Revolution of 1789, was the first to send volunteers and pay tax!! The square is accessible by the metro station "Saint Paul" line No. 1 on the way back to the Bastille or the station "Bastille" lines 1, 5 and 8 , then you have to take The Street Saint Antoine to the street of Birague on the right.

  • One of my favorite places in Paris. Very picturesque and feels still a bit local and not so touristy. Get some coffee or snack and sit down in the sun and observe Parisian everyday life!
  • Incredible little known historical square. Love the surrounding art galleries and shops. Wouldn’t eat here though, tourist prices for non tourist food. Go a couple street elsewhere for more authentic French food.
